Ritual: A Breast Massage for Emotional Alchemy

The transition into a new year can be an emotionally unsettling time. It’s preceded by the busy holiday season and often we become so distracted by gift giving and holiday parties that we don’t make time to process the events of the last twelve months. As a result, we arrive in the new year feeling bewildered and unsure of our next steps.

On Saturday, December 22nd, a gentle full moon in Cancer invites us to press pause on the madness and prioritize self-nurturing. Occurring the day after the Winter Solstice, this full moon initiates us into Capricorn season and marks the subtle shift as our days gradually grow longer in preparation for Spring. If we can embrace this turning point, it stands to illuminate the changes that are needed as we pass from one year into the next.

Cancer is the cardinal water sign that is ruled by the moon and known for its intuitive, protective nature. Because the moon is also associated with feminine, maternal energy, it makes sense that Cancer rules over the breasts.

Breasts were our first home outside of the womb. Infants are placed upon their mother’s chest when they’re born and regardless of whether they’re breastfed, they are typically fed in a cradled position against the breasts. As they spend their first months cycling between eating and sleeping, the heartbeat of their caregivers become the opening soundtrack of their lives.

The heart center has wisdom to share, but it speaks a different language than the mind. It communicates in subtle ways and unlike the mind, which is happy to blather on in almost any circumstance, the heart requires stillness.

This ritual can be done anytime you are feeling disconnected from the heart or need to invite a heart-centered perspective to weigh in on the mind’s analysis. Chakrubs rose quartz breast massager can also be used for this ritual.

Time commitment: 20-30 minutes

You will need:

– Massage or body oil of your choice

– Pen and journal

This ritual will be done topless in front of a mirror, but you should begin with a brief (5-10 minute) meditation to help you tune in.

As you stand before the mirror and prepare to give your breasts some much-deserved attention, take a moment to appreciate the body that is reflected back at you. Thank your heart for its steady beat and the blood it circulates throughout your body.

Begin to think about a situation that is unresolved and that you would like clarity on. You might think of an area of your life where you feel blocked and would like to release.

Apply your preferred body oil to your breasts and armpits. Cup one hand above the opposite breast so that your fingertips snuggle into your armpit and your thumb is on the front of your chest. Squeeze this area in a rhythmic pumping motion to clear the lymph from your armpit.

As you massage, try to name the emotion that is most prevalent when you think of this block. If it is an unresolved situation that you are trying to mitigate, you might consider the dominant fear that is preventing you from reaching resolution. What is the benefit of remaining blocked? How does this blockage cause harm to you or others?

Gradually move your hand down to the top part of your breast and gently work around the outside, under, and inner parts of the breast, around the nipple, and back towards the armpit, using the same pumping motion. Experiment with faster and slower paces and switch between using a firm and softer grip to see what is most pleasurable to you. Use your fingertips to make gentle circles in these areas, continuing in a motion that pushes fluid towards your armpit.

As you settle on the dominant feeling or fear that is keeping you blocked, try to think back to the first time you felt this way. Perhaps there was a moment in childhood where you were punished or shamed for being honest and now you find it difficult to be authentic in your life. When we do not address and heal childhood wounds they metastasize and cause problems as we get older. This ritual provides an opportunity to safety explore those feelings and nurture our inner child.

Work on each breast for five to ten minutes. You can massage each breast at the same time or devote both hands to one breast at a time depending on your preference. As you massage your right breast, pause and allow yourself to feel your heartbeat. How is your heart seeking to guide you through this moment?

As you trace this blockage back to childhood, consider what you needed in that moment and how you can give it to yourself now. Maybe you can imagine the adults in your life listening patiently and validating your experience. Perhaps your inner child needs permission to walk away from a toxic situation.

Hold space for whatever comes up in this moment. If it is too painful to heal right now, commit to revisit it at another time. If you do not have a relationship with your inner child, it make take several attempts before they feel safe enough to express themselves.

After you have traced your present fear or blockage to its root, check in and see if you feel more able to release or resolve the situation. You might not and that’s perfectly fine. The important thing is that you have invited the heart to weigh in and now understand on an emotional level why this blockage is manifesting in your life.

Let your mind rest and continue to give attention to your breasts. Give gratitude to your heart for opening up to you and thank your inner child for its wisdom.

Continue massaging for as long as it feels good. If you are aroused, you can conclude this ritual with a self-pleasure session and focus on releasing during the moment of climax.

Afterwards, journal what came up and detail any progress you made towards recognizing and releasing your blocks.
